Pet Insurance Cost Calculator

Pet insurance premiums can range from under $20 to well over $150 a month, and the price depends mostly on four things: your pet’s species, breed, age, and where you live. This calculator turns those four inputs into an instant, data-backed estimate using our Dataset v1, the same model behind every cost page on PetCostHub.

How to Use This Calculator

Choose whether you are insuring a dog or a cat, then pick the breed (the list changes with your pet type), the state you live in, your pet’s age band, and the plan type. Accident & illness plans cover both injuries and sicknesses and are what most owners buy; accident-only plans are cheaper but exclude illnesses entirely. Press Estimate My Cost and you will get an estimated monthly range, the yearly equivalent, and a note on exactly which inputs produced it. Nothing you enter is stored or sent anywhere, the calculation runs entirely in your browser.

A Worked Example

Say you have a 3-year-old Labrador Retriever in California and want accident & illness coverage. Our dataset puts the adult Labrador base premium at $50/month nationally. California’s state cost factor is 1.05, reflecting slightly above-average veterinary costs. The model multiplies the two: $50 × 1.05 = $52.50, and the calculator shows it as a range of roughly $46–$59/month, or about $630 a year. Change the age band to 8+ years and the same dog’s estimate jumps, because senior premiums run roughly double the adult rate.

What Moves Your Premium Most

Breed is usually the biggest factor: a French Bulldog costs about twice as much to insure as a Beagle because of its known health risks. Age comes next, senior pets (8+) commonly cost two to three times the adult rate. State shifts prices by up to ±35% around the national average, because insurers file rates based on local claim costs. Plan type sets the floor: accident-only coverage costs roughly a quarter of full accident & illness coverage, but leaves illnesses uninsured.

Calculator FAQs

Is this estimate a real quote?

No. It is a modeled estimate built from published industry averages (NAPHIA) and state quote medians, not a quote from any insurer. Real quotes require your pet’s exact age, breed mix, ZIP code and medical history, plus your deductible, reimbursement rate and annual limit choices.

Why a range instead of one number?

Because honest pricing has a spread. Two identical dogs in the same state can be quoted 20% apart by different carriers. We show a ±12% range around the modeled figure so you can budget realistically rather than anchor on a single point.

Which age band should I pick?

Use your pet’s current age: under 1 year, 1–3, 4–7, or 8+. The 1–3 and 4–7 bands share the dataset’s adult pricing, while puppies and kittens are priced on the young band and pets 8 and older on the senior band.

Where does the data come from?

National averages come from NAPHIA’s State of the Industry Report; state cost factors are derived from Insurify’s published state quote medians (January 2026); breed base premiums combine published carrier and study figures with clearly labeled modeling. Our methodology page documents every source and formula.

All figures are estimates for planning and comparison only, not quotes or offers of insurance. Actual premiums vary by provider, deductible, reimbursement rate, annual limit, and your pet’s age and health.
